A Woman’s Hammer
The rise of women is coming
I recently re-bought a book that captured my full attention years ago in 2012. It’s called The End of Men: And the Rise of Women, written by the senior editor of The Atlantic magazine, Hanna Rosin. This book carries that same edutainment style that journalists tend to use in their writing, but with a little more sass. She kicks off the book with sex and promiscuity as chapter one. Not something I feel a lot of male writers would have done. I could be wrong, but something in my bones tells me men wouldn’t have the guts to lead off with so much controversy and vulnerability.
Throughout the book Hanna mentions many examples of why women have rapidly turned the tides, and why they are more poised to succeed than men. For instance, women are pouncing at the new opportunities provided to them ever since women’s rights opened up a wide range of options in the mid to late 1900s. Women now hold at least 50% of the spots in medical and law schools. Women are dominant as pharmacists. And even in the precarious area of business, women are gaining great traction in higher executive positions. They haven’t made huge dents in the very top CEO positions, but that is only a matter of time. Old, white men do die eventually, and someone will have to take their place. With many women second in command their chances are pretty good.
